Student serves as a vessel of inspiration in “An Embodied Dance”

When N.C. Central University’s junior mass communication and theater major, Jayah Gomez, took to the dance floor as the lead soloist in “An Embodied Dance” she was not only representing the authentic and unapologetic beauty of black women like her mother-- her inspiration -- she was also using the performance herself to come to terms with the final chapter of a relationship.

Gomez’ performance was the opening feature to the N.C. Museum of Art’s exhibit, “Memory is Ritual.” The exhibit also features the Beautiful Project, an art non-profit that “cultivates Black women in utilizing voice and power to define beauty.”

“So proud to be a part of this creative effort and so proud of my dancers for embodying this work and allowing themselves to be vessels for the piece,” said NCCU director of dance Kristi Vincent Johnson. She choreographed “An Embodied Dance” for the NCCU Repertory Dance Company.

Other NCCU student dancers included Aisha Mayo, Lydia Banuelos, Parker Darby, Jasmine Sims, Jamiia Owens, Ta’Niya Stephens, Thea Real Jones, and Trel McNair.

Durham Housing Authority Media Release

“We will act on a scale that few, if any, other cities in this country are doing, certainly no other cities of our size,” Schewel said. “But this isn’t just about the scale. It is also about where the housing will be. We will create an inclusive downtown in Durham, a racially diverse downtown, the impossible dream for growing American cities. We will choose the future that is worthy of a city that wants to live up to its claim to be a progressive beacon for the South and the nation,” said Durham Mayor Schewel as the city launched its affordable housing initiative.

Homeward, Durham is the official name for the program providing over $95 million in efforts to address the affordable housing issue. The city’s funding will be used to help build and preserve 2,400 affordable housing and rental units, provide permanent housing for the homeless, help first time buyers and to help current tenants and homeowners with renovations. Funding and aid relief for those affected by COVID-19 will be available as well. The city of Durham teamed up with the Durham Housing Authority to come up with a beneficial plan for the future.
